AOL Dives Deeper Into Mobile Services

AOL will announce several new services for mobile devices today at the CTIA trade show in San Francisco, including a Winamp update that should get more attention from music fans. Among the announcements today will be news of a mobile-specific update for Winamp, the MP3 and multimedia player AOL acquired in 1999.

A company spokesperson said the Winamp Remote service update encourages the sharing of music and video streams between mobile users. By installing Winamp on a PC, navigating from a WAP-enabled phone to AOL Entertainment, and logging in to Winamp, online media streams can be accessed anywhere.

Several changes have been planned for AOL Mobile, including tweaks to their Search, Mail, and myAOL services. The updates should make more content available faster for AOL's mobile userbase.

They also hope to bring in more people through a new feature for the shopping vertical. AOL Shopping Mobile touts availability of 20 million products from 10,000 stores through the mobile interface, along with price comparisons and click-to-call connections to retailers.

Alltel and Verizon mobile users can access the AIM service through text messaging. Those customers can reach AIM through the AIM Short Code service by texting AIMAIM (246246).

The big debut comes with the AOL MyMobile Preview for Windows Mobile devices. This service combines several AOL content areas, including AOL Mail, AOL CityGuide, MapQuest, Local Search, News, Weather, Sports, and Pictures, in one portal.
