The timing’s a little vague, but according to one of the company’s executives, an official YouTube.in site will go live within the next six months.
“We plan to launch YouTube India anytime between January and March 2008,” said Shashi Seth, YouTube’s Head of Monetization, in an interview with the Hindustan Times. And although Google’s investors may have other things to be anxious about, they needn’t worry that the launch will spawn new lawsuits.
“One of the key challenges will be to comply with the local laws in India, and we are making sure that our service does not violate any legal prerequisites,” Seth later stated.
Of course, not getting sued isn’t the same thing as being wildly successful, and onlookers might have valid concerns on that front. YouTube.com hasn’t seen a lot of interest from India - only about one percent of the site’s global traffic comes from that country. Also, there are already quite a few Indian video-sharing sites with which a new version of YouTube will have to compete.
Still, Google’s products have a pretty good track record in India (Orkut practically owes its existence to India and Brazil), so YouTube India should (with no pun intended) be a product worth watching.
