Google Reader Gives Up Its Numbers

Another tidbit of information about feeds on Google Reader emerged, showing how easy it is to find out how many Reader users have subscribed to a particular feed. Bloggers have been excitedly chattering about a find at Google Operating System for Google Reader. A simple trick lets anyone figure out how many subscribers have signed on to someone else's feed through the service.

Through Google Reader's 'Add Subscription' feature, one can search for a site with a published feed. The results of that search show a number of subscribers using Google to pick up the content of that feed.

Matt Cutts said the figures look like they are just for Google Reader subscriptions. Users of iGoogle and Orkut who subscribe to feed through those services probably aren't counted.

TechCrunch published a spreadsheet of top blogs and their subscriber numbers as cited by Techmeme's Gabe Rivera. Blogs don't make an appearance until number five and six, Engadget and TechCrunch respectively.

The BBC, Google News, ESPN, and MarketWatch had the most subscribers in Rivera's count. News, sports, and finance, followed by gadgets and new web services, gain the most attention from feed subscribers through Google Reader.

If there was a blog about beer in the top ten, we would feel pretty safe in suggesting more men than women have been subscribing to feeds through Google Reader.
