User-Generated Media Increasing

Between 46 percent and 83 percent of the online populations of France, The United States and the United Kingdom use user- generated media at least monthly, according to Gartner.

The percentage of those who use UGM relates to both age and geography. Teens used UGM more than adults in all countries for nearly all activities. The percentage of Internet users who used UGM was lower in the U.S. than in France or the UK for both teens and adults in all categories. U.S. spent more time per capita on UGM than users in other countries.

"Many people are now adopting CGM as a permanent part of their personal media mix, and the media companies need to wake up to its significance," said Adam Daum, vice president of research at Gartner

"Media companies ... cannot just focus on creating great entertainment," Mr. Daum said. "They need to build in CGM, encouraging audiences to contribute original content and provide feedback on existing content, enable sharing of clips and so on."
