Google Sees Progress At Data Center Site

Google’s market cap is currently hovering around $177 billion, and although that sum can’t perform magic, it is a powerful motivator - construction on the search giant’s Lenoir, North Carolina facility is apparently moving along at a surprising pace.

Construction projects are supposed to run behind schedule; everybody knows this.  But in an article for The News & Observer, Jonathan B. Cox reports, “Google announced Thursday that those workers soon will begin construction on a second facility on the campus. . . .  The move was expected but is a bit ahead of schedule.  It’s a welcome development for local leaders, who were criticized for the size of the incentives offered to Google, operator of the most popular Internet search engine.”

Not that those local leaders have been let off the hook - there are still concerns about the generous (and/or excessive) tax breaks that were given to Google.  It’ll help to have results, however, even before the search company can move in with more money and job offers.

According to the Hickory Daily Record, Lenoir Mayor David Barlow stated, “[I]t is good news for our local construction crews and for everyone here looking forward to seeing a world-wide brand like Google up and running.”
