Google Could Be Major Publisher

Google could at any time try its hand in the publishing industry according to a report by Outsell developed with GGReport titled "Google as a Publisher: Is Google Poised for a New Push into the Information Industry?"

"News publishers and providers, book and magazine publishers, and directory providers are all in Google's line of fire," said Leigh Watson Healy, Chief Analyst, Outsell.

The Outsell reports say that because of Google's technical infrastructure, patents and development processes, the company is ready to enter the publishing arena if they choose. Google's assembled technologies cover the whole spectrum of publishing's functions, from content acquisition to e-commerce and royalty payments.

"Google has the potential to enter certain market sectors with minimal investment and virtually no programming. If a sector does not draw clicks or advertisers, the initiative can be killed and neither financial nor technical harm is inflicted on Google. Contrast this situation with any traditional publisher wanting to shift from print to online," said Healy.

Google as a publisher

The carnage such a move would cause to established publishers, large and small, would be catastrophic. It would ruin an entire industry just to expand one company's meager profits.

The only recourse would be a boycott of Google by the industry. They can only sell Harry Potter and Stephen King if they have permission from the publishers and authors. Neither body is likely to be pleased.

Google would be left with publishing from their own stable of questionable talent and the attempt would leave them with a black eye and everyone else with a bad taste in their mouth.

publisher

I think Google could be a publisher those people that work there are very smart. Amazon does it so can Google.

Google As A Publisher

Given the fact that the publishing industry is dominated by the larger presses, and the difficulty -- near impossibility -- for small publishers and unknown writers to reach the kind of markets Google has access to, it could provide a needed injection of new blood into the industry. While large publishers could stumble, a wealth of small publishers and unknown writers could gain access to new markets. The name of the publishing game is niche-marketing and Google could supply a very large bunch of niches.

Google talent isn't an issue. Google isn't going to write the books, just provide the marketing and back end services. That's what they're good at. Hooking up with POD providers like www.lulu.com could provide a dynamic machine.

Google CEO Said "Not Publishing"

Hi

You forgot the fact the Google CEO was recently quoted as saying that Google is not a publishing entity and not headed in that direction.

Peace
