Dude, Dell's Getting Sued

Poor customer service and deceptive advertising by Dell have led New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to sue the computer maker.

Cuomo dropped by Albany County Supreme Court to file a lawsuit against Dell, one of the biggest computer manufacturers in the world. The suit blasted Dell for using a variety of deceptive business practices on an ongoing basis.

“At Dell, customer service means no service at all," Cuomo said in a statement. "Dell’s consumers were intentionally misled, and they had to pay for that privilege."

The lawsuit cited Dell and Dell Financial Services (DFS) for engaging in 'bait and switch' financing tactics. Offers of no interest or no payment financing were denied to customers, even ones with good credit scores, when they tried to buy something under those offered terms.

People sometimes did not realize their computer purchases through DFS were being financed at massive interest rates of 20 percent or greater.

The lawsuit also accuses Dell of refusing to satisfy requests for onsite repair service from people who purchased service contracts under those terms. Dell also used defective parts or whole systems to repair or replace customer machines, the suit alleges.

Dell's Side

Hi David,

It wasn't clear in your report but, for balance, I'd like to present Dell's side. We deny the claims and will represent ourselves vigorously in court. Here's our public statement: "We're confident that our practices will be found to be fair and appropriate. While even one dissatisfied customer is too many, the allegations in the AG's filing are based upon a small fraction of Dell's consumer transactions in New York."

Thanks,

John

About time

Personally i think that it is about time someone has started with that. I do not like dell. Over the years their practice of making hardware in their computers proprietary has, in my view, made it a bad choice for customers. I would never deal with dell personally because of that reason alone. As for the false advertising, I don't have an opinion simply because there are so many companies out there that do that and singling out Dell for that is simply put stupid.
