It's 2009 and the limit is 7352 MB.
Amidst concerns (and excitement) about what Gmail might do on its April 1 birthday, confirmation has come that the service’s storage quota will continue to increase beyond that date.
After all, it just wouldn’t be Gmail without the “and counting” statement (note the flurry of activity earlier this week when the counter disappeared). This news should also be comforting to people who have bumped up against Gmail’s current storage limits (although I have trouble imagining how this is possible).
For, according to Google Operating System, more space is on the way. “Google updated the code responsible for the storage counter from Gmail’s counter and revealed what to expect in the future,” reported Ionut Alex. Chitu. By April 1 of this year, Gmail users should be looking at a quota of 2835 MB. By 2012, the limit will have reached 3560 MB.
That’s assuming, of course, that nothing changes over the next five years, which seems unlikely. Chitu and his source, Niraj Sanghvi, both mentioned that alterations have taken place in the past. “[T]hey usually change the targets over time to reach them faster or slower,” Sanghvi wrote of Google.
There’s one other possible event that would effectively sweep all bets off the table: the fabled Gdrive could launch. There haven’t been any new rumors about this product in a while, though, so for the time being, let’s just stick to the facts: Gmail’s storage quota, because of or in spite of its upcoming birthday, will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.
