Yahoo Starts Matching Souls

Yahoo has partnered with Beliefnet, a "leading spirituality media company" (oxymoron, anyone?), to enhance an online community for spiritual daters. Dubbed Soulmatch, the site is already up and running; this new arrangement will supposedly make Soulmatch "the largest and most active" site of its kind.

Beliefnet chose Yahoo Personals to power Soulmatch, "providing existing Soulmatch customers with the ability to search the entire Yahoo! Personals database and sort matches by religious or spirituality preferences." The two dating sites, viewed back to back, are now extremely similar.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. Yahoo Personals "offers a dynamic dating site that attracts more than 5 million visitors per month." And Beliefnet "offers its community of more than 9 million members a balance of inspirational and practical information on many different areas of spirituality" - in addition to an interview with Mr. T.

Anna Zomasa, the vice president and general manager of Yahoo Personals, voiced her support for the collaboration. "We believe a great spiritual dating site would offer a large community of daters, excellent search and matching tools, and superlative content about spiritual relationships," she said in a statement. "Our partnership with Beliefnet will give us the opportunity to provide all three elements to customers seeking spiritual chemistry."

That "spiritual chemistry" may come about thanks to a matching system that can "zero in on areas such as personality, ethnicity, sense of humor and more." And although a significant portion of the WebProNews writing staff finds that slightly creepy, Soulmatch proclaims itself "a safe environment" that provides a "secure, anonymous mailbox for all your flirting."

Soulmatch may indeed be just the right "meeting ground for daters who prioritize spirituality and faith-based compatibility."
