eBay Blocking PS3 Presales

Trying to avoid a repeat of last year's X-mas Box 360 madness, where consoles were selling for as much as 10 times their retail price but not always making it to the purchaser, eBay has suspended preorder sales of Sony's PlayStation3.

Due to be released next month, preorders for the highly anticipated game console have sold out from vendors nationwide, most likely to eBay opportunists buying out the 400,000 consoles allocated by Sony for the U.S. launch.

A number like that guarantees a shortage, and a very high resale price.

But it looks like eBay and GameStop have put the old kibosh on preordered sales this year. According to a Trust & Safety forum thread at eBay:

"Due to the high demand and limited supply of [Sony Playstation3] we are taking stronger measures to protect both buyers and sellers in the eBay community. Currently, eBay is not permitting ?Pre-Sale? of this item, and sellers who list it on eBay must have physical possession of the products at time of listing."

Once released, vendors selling the PS3 will also need to provide a copy of their driver's license, a credit card bill or utility statement, a purchase invoice, sign their name in blood to eBay's policy agreements (the part about the blood's not true, there Sparky).
