Over 82 percent of Chinese Internet users report that the Internet is their main information channel, says Nielsen//Netratings. With such a huge population adopting broadband at a rapid pace, the Chinese Web is as ripe for advertising as it can be.
This also creates a need to measure the advertising landscape to better understand where opportunities lay. Nielsen debuted its AdRelevance service in China in May to monitor the country's top websites.
The growth of online advertising in China has been insatiable. In May, 587 display advertisers launched 1500 campaigns with 3700 banners. By July, the numbers shot up by nearly 40 percent to 817 advertisers running over 2200 campaigns and nearly 5800 banner ads.
That brings the spending tally between May and July to about $190 million, says Nielsen, nearly equaling China's magazine ad spending. The biggest spenders will sound familiar; nearly half of them are American companies.
By sector, the big spenders were in the automotive, computer and electronics, and FMCG industries. Together these sectors were responsible for 60 percent of the quarter's ad spend.
