YouTube, the company without a business strategy, seems to have developed at least one idea about what it wants to "do." Co-founder Steve Chen announced his goal "to have every music video ever created up on YouTube" within the next year and a half. I'm not sure how to phrase this in a more mature manner, so I'll just say it: that would be pretty cool.

Chen made this plan public in an interview with Reuters. "We're trying to bring in as much of this content as we can onto the site," he said. The article said that YouTube intends "to integrate the record companies' videos into the community features of its site, allowing users to add the videos to their own profiles and post reviews like on Amazon.com and RealNetworks' Rhapsody."

The YouTube co-founder compared his site to one potential competitor. "Yahoo Launch is almost an exact parallel of MTV but viewed through a Web browser," Chen said. "We add the whole user-community feel, with 100 million views every day and user-generated content."

That user-generated content is what YouTube is perhaps best known for. One example of this is "geriatric1927," whose real name is Peter. This 77-year-old British man has risen to Internet stardom through YouTube - the BBC News even aired a piece about him recently. It's almost a challenge to find Peter's videos now, as a search mostly turns up evidence of the fans he has won.

Following the addition to YouTube of "every music video ever created," we'd probably get a much clearer picture of Peter's opinion of the modern music scene. Other uses would certainly share their outlook, as well. If Steve Chen has his way, this will all happen within the next year or so.
