Facebook Gives Away iTunes
Facebook is going give away 10 million iTunes music samplers over the next 10 weeks.
Nice, right?
It remains unclear who is footing the bill; that is, whether this is a promotion for Apple or Facebook. And, to be honest, it might be best to reserve judgment until the (artistic) quality of those samplers becomes known.
Owen Van Natta, the chief operating officer at Facebook, spoke about the giveaway in a press release.
"iTunes is the most popular digital music service in the world and we are excited to offer this exclusive giveaway of 10 million music samplers from iTunes," he said.
"We're always striving to provide people with the things they care most about, and with over half a million bands listed on Facebook we know that listening to and downloading music is an integral part of our users' lives," Van Natta continued.
Apple's vice president of iTunes seemed equally upbeat about the collaboration.
"We're thrilled to work with Facebook on this great promotion," he said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for people to legally discover and enjoy music on the iTunes Music Store through their favorite social directory."
A Techdirt article revealed a few more of the giveaway's details.
The "music samplers' . . . appear to be playlists of 25 songs at once - each representing a musical genre," Mike wrote. "The only way to get the samplers' is to be connected to the Apple group page within Facebook, suggesting its like similar other attempts for brands to become friends' of individuals within social networking offerings."
I liked the first response to the Techdirt article, written by Kay Park. "Interesting idea. Don't know if it'll help either way."
