The Yahoo Publisher Network blog posted a reminder about its RSS ad program, for publishers who wish to monetize the feeds they provide.
Most feedreaders will see those ads, blog editor Michael Mattis posted in a recent entry, and Yahoo makes adding the code as easy as cutting and pasting it into the publisher's site.
Doing this places Yahoo's Content Match advertising into the RSS feed. Mattis said most feedreaders will display the ads properly, but a few exist that can block them upon being configured to do so by the user.
Most blogs and many websites have enabled RSS feeds for their content. They provide an alternative communication method to email, and by their nature are a purely opt-in technology.
That aspect makes advertising in RSS a compelling prospect, and one that Yahoo would like to see more of its Publisher Network embrace:
If you frequently add content to your site, you should definitely look into creating an RSS feed, and using Yahoo! Ads in RSS to earn extra revenue. If you're in our network, you have access to Ads in RSS tools, when logged into your account, under the Ad Setup tab.
Getting started with RSS is pretty straightforward, although it is a wee bit trickier than setting up our Web-based Content Match product. As with the Content Match ads on your website, Yahoo! Ads in RSS are compatible with both Moveable Type and WordPress publishing platforms.
As we noted yesterday, some of the folks behind the Yahoo Publishing Network will be at PubCon in Boston next week. WebProNews editor Mike McDonald will be there too, and plans to pass along his observations on the conference for us to share with our readers.
