San Jose City College will offer 10,000 email accounts to students, the first time the school has ever offered email accounts to students.

It looks like Garett Rogers at ZDNet was on target with his Gmail source code assessment that we discussed yesterday. Google announced it would fulfill the role as email host for SJCC:

We're testing a new service with the school by hosting Gmail accounts with SJCC domain addresses (like student@jaguars.sjcc.edu), plus admin tools for efficient account management....Together, we're pleased to provide this channel for better communications and a stronger community for all 10,000 SJCC students.
DNS records referenced by Garett show how mail requests for the second-level domain jaguars.sjcc.edu are answered by googlemail.com and google.com servers. This is how he predicted a managed domain solution for Gmail would function.

As with nearly all things Google, the hosted mail solution is a beta offering. Google did note on its official blog how other companies could apply to be part of the test too. First, someone has to login with a Google Account to the request form.

Google then asks a few questions about the organization, including a checkbox to indicate if all the email users are in the United States; then they ask about the user who is applying. After the application, Google tells users it will let them know when the beta will be available.

As with the release of Google Desktop 3 and its Search Across Computers feature, we expect to see even more privacy concerns erupt about this managed domain email service.
