Get DirectTV In Xbox 360

Just like any other big tech convention, cool announcements always float out that make everyone giddy like children and this is no exception. DirectTV announced they would be pairing up with software goliath Microsoft to put the digital television service in the Xbox 360.

The arrangement will include other sides besides the Xbox. Users will also be able to pump their favorite TV stations through Windows - based PCs, the regular set-top boxes and PlaysForSure compatible devices.

"This agreement is a significant milestone for consumers and content owners, since it will greatly extend the reach and flexibility of digital entertainment in the home," said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft.

"By integrating our Windows Media platform technologies with the DirecTV service, we have created a pipeline for an incredible variety of premium digital entertainment to move seamlessly and securely throughout the home to anywhere a DirecTV customer wants to enjoy it."

"DirecTV is committed to delivering the best television experience available, and through our new alliance with Microsoft, we will extend that experience in a way that will allow us to deliver our programming wherever and whenever our customers want it," said Chase Carey, president and CEO of DirecTV.

"Through this agreement, both companies will be able to expand the reach of digital content and work together to create a variety of exciting new ways for our customers to enjoy the DirecTV experience as well as the digital content stored on their Windows-based PCs."

So let's put things in perspective. As this writer discussed months ago, Microsoft was building an all-encompassing experience around the Xbox 360. Bill Gates said he wanted a "convivial" experience. So it's really beginning to take shape. They announced an extension to add the HD DVD option to the device. Users will be able to run the DirectTV satellite service through the device. Then there's all the interactive game play either online or in the room with multiple wireless controllers. All you need is one of the groovy high-definition televisions for the device and experience will be near complete. All you'll need is some people to play and you're ready to roll.

Oh don't forget the Cheetos and Mountain Dew.
