Google Clarifies Base Jump Change

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Google has now officially acknowledged the placement of jump pages in Google Base, a change that had been quietly implemented recently.

In a search for listings on Google Base, a link would take the visitor directly to the site containing the listing. A report by Jim Townsend in the latest Classified Intelligence report noted how Google had changed that behavior.

Now, selecting a link in the Base search results goes to an item detail page on Google instead of directly to the listing site. Google described the change in the latest post to the Base blog:

This change allows us to experiment with how you browse and search on Google Base and see related items. The item details page enables you to see all the attributes and labels attached to the item and provides links to items with similar labels. We want to measure how this navigation changes the number of searches and other ways people will use it.
Google also plans to make other navigation changes to Base to best "optimize the experience." They noted that searches on Google, Froogle, and Local returning Google Base items will point their links directly to the item's URL.
