An alternative to Flickr will give those users a different choice than whether or not they should stay with Yahoo.
BIOS Magazine notes in a recent article how Flickr users, some of whom are displeased at being absorbed into the Yahoo family, can try an alternative service called Fotothing.
Fotothing identifies itself as a photo blogging site. Its promotion aimed at Flickr users offers a free trial of a 'Pro' Fotothing account. The 'Pro' account allows users to upload 15 photos per day, and eliminates the various banner and text ads seen on the site. The trial lasts a month, after which a monthly fee to maintain the 'Pro' account will be required.
That's the choice users will have to make. Flickr has been a free, ad-supported service, a model that Yahoo will continue to employ. A small number of Flickr users have objected to becoming members of Yahoo, which requires registration and the sharing of some personal information.
Fotothing offers a free version of its site, supported by ads. The free version lacks some of the features of the Pro version, but allows for photo sharing, comments, and tagging. As it is already owned by another company, Fotothing probably won't be acquired by Yahoo anytime soon.
