Ex-IBM Exec is New AMD CTO

As AMD CTO Fred Weber leaves the company, former IBM exec Phil Hester is taking the reigns. He has about 30 years of industry experience.

Hester worked for IBM for 23 of those years in various positions including CTO of the PC division, and general manager of the Integrated Product Solutions division.

Hester then went on to become the founder and CEO of enterprise server maker Newisys, based in Austin, Texas. Now AMD is happy to have him on board.

"Phil comes to AMD with a proven track record of success," said Dirk Meyer, AMD's president and COO of its Microprocessor Solutions Sector.

"We're thrilled to have a technologist and business leader of his caliber join AMD," he added. Hester seems to be just as thrilled to be part of the team.

"I have always been a fan of AMD's technology and design philosophies, going back to my early days at IBM," said Hester. "When AMD64 was first introduced, I knew right away it was something very special."

Hester will manage the company's advanced infrastructure strategies, and will work closely with AMD's partners and customers such as Microsoft and the Linux community.
