Web Responds To Need For Katrina Info

When the Red Cross put out the call for assistance to the public in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, web users hit the site in droves.

More than 1.1 million people visited the Red Cross web site on Wednesday, August 31, say figures from Nielsen//NetRatings. The Red Cross has requested donations to help it assist the thousands of people displaced by the devastating storm.

A need for weather news gripped web users. NOAA.gov, which hosted images of the incoming storm, saw 3.2 million visitors on Monday, August 29. Weather.com, the Weather Channel's online presence, had 9 million visitors that day, while Weatherbug.com drew almost 10 million.

Online searches for the words "Hurricane" and/or "Katrina" hit 1.7 million, according to comScore. On the news side, MediaPost notes that by noon on September 1, CNN had received more than 10,000 emails from "citizen journalists." More than 600 included either images or videos.
