Rainy Day Tips: Stumble Upon Mozillas Time Waster

Maybe this is old news, but I haven't heard many talking about it. Mozilla's Firefox browser has a toolbar extension called "Stumble Upon" that will make you lose entire days to web surfing. If you're the busy sort, just skip it.

As if we needed another reason to choose Firefox over Internet Explorer, the Stumble Upon extension will grab you by the mouse and not let you go. Once added to the toolbar, users fill out a quick questionnaire about the types of websites and content that interests them. You can pick games, art, philosophy, physics, politics, religionwell the list goes on and on.

After you've accomplished that minor detail, you can stumble away. By pressing the button on the toolbar, you are taken to user-recommended websites that match the interests you indicated in the questionnaire.

The extension also learns from user behavior by providing buttons labeled "I like it" and "Not for me" which further narrows down the types of content you're interested in.

Every time you give a website the thumbs up (I like it), you automatically become part of the user network recommending great websites to others.

But don't casually place this feature on your toolbar. It's a distracting time-sucker. After all, every bit of content you discover is interesting to you because you told it you liked stuff like that. This, by effect, is a trap you've set for yourself and therefore you'll only have yourself to blame-and me for telling you about it.
