I sat in on the RSS, Blogs & Search Engine Marketing session at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in San Jose today.

The session focused on how search engines deal with blog and feed content, and included presentations from RedBoots Consulting Partner Nan Dawkins, SEO-PR President and Co-Founder Greg Jarboe, Netconcepts, LLC Founder and President Stephan Spencer, and Amanda Watlington, Ph.D., APR of Searching for Profit. Following is some information I gathered from the session:

Relevant Content is King. Demand for RSS Content is growing. RSS allows for the ease of work for both the end user and the developers.

To manage feeds properly, you have to:

  • Create
  • Validate
  • Diseminate
  • Elimate (old content)
  • RSS readers facilitate the use of RSS. The readers are used to manage the bulk of the info. RSS gives users the ability distribute content and make it widely available. With RSS technology, anyone can be a publisher. Syndication makes content available to everyone, not just blogs, Amazon, NPR, etc.

    The RSS challenge:

  • comes from imagination, not implementation
  • allows site owners to syndicate other content on other sites
  • allows site owners to leverage their own content: new product announcements, etc.
  • allows site owners to connect to the end user and should be used to deliver special announcements (press releases, etc.)
  • allows site owners to write feeds for so that the content is meaningful to the end user, etc.
  • RSS is very good for search marketing. Keywords, title, etc. are very important. Figure out how to lasso this technology for your and your audiences benefit. As search embraces RSS, content providers should as well.

    Benefits of RSS include:

  • 6.43 CTR 500% better than email
  • It is a proven traffic and sales generator.
  • RSS doesn't get caught by spam filters
  • They let you get link out there
  • Other things to note:

  • Great link text is important.
  • Be aware of how your RSS content looks to others.
  • With blogs, you should deliver content by the category, depending on the categories your blog offers.
  • You should use full text feeds rather than summaries.
  • Watch out for using feed content for search purposes, because content that isn't yours can be adopted to appear like it is.
  • MSN Search and Yahoo both offer RSS for search results.
  • Podcasts are not considered to be so without the necessary RSS integration.
  • Make your feeds easy to unsubscribe to.
  • Allow your RSS feed to be autodiscoverd by browsers like firefox and safari.
  • Personalize feeds (custom feeds) for users.
  • Be sure to use good titles in the description process.
  • Make sure your feed has been submitted to the MyYahoo RSS feed reader.
  • Submit it and ping Yahoo after you make updates.
