The Monad command shell won't be shipped with the forthcoming Windows Vista operating system.
After Finnish security firm F-Secure disclosed the existence of proof of concept viruses for Monad, Microsoft responded with a posting in the Security Response Center blog that the scripting shell won't ship with Windows Vista.
Stephen Toulouse posted on Saturday that Monad was pulled not out of concern regarding the Danom proof-of-concept viruses, though. "Monad is probably going to be a longer term project than Windows Vista, and we didn't just decide to remove it today or yesterday," Mr. Toulouse wrote on Saturday.
He mentioned in an earlier post that Monad was not part of Windows Vista Beta 1 or Windows Server 2003 R2. Users who want to obtain Monad to try out its features can download the shell by following instructions listed on the F-Secure web site.
Previous reports had noted Monad would be part of the next release of Exchange in 2006, and would be the first product to include the command shell. Microsoft would likely include it in future products after it has had time to refine the product, as noted in Microsoft's blog post.
