Version 1.6, recently out of beta testing, can search the desktop from its toolbar on Internet Explorer.

A new version of the Copernic desktop search was announced by the company today in a press release. The product contains advanced indexing options, allowing users to better control how the product functions while a user actively works on the computer, or if it is on a laptop running on battery power.

The product's web site notes it will index Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, along with Acrobat PDFs and multimedia files. It can search through files, and through emails and attachments. Copernic will index Outlook emails as they arrive, as well as documents on Windows platforms as soon as they are saved.

The site doesn't list support for Lotus Notes documents by default, a feature included in Google's enterprise desktop search. In the FAQ, Copernic notes additional file types can be indexed by designating them from the Advanced option tab.

Copernic also claims on its site that the desktop search product will be fault-tolerant, and a large index won't suddenly go corrupt and become unusable. Users who have been frustrated by documents that became corrupt will appreciate that, and hopefully will save their spreadsheets a bit more often.
