Meteorologic models indicate Hurricane Dennis will steer away from central Florida and move up the Gulf of Mexico.
Hurricane Dennis upgraded from tropical storm status Wednesday evening, according to a report from the National Hurricane Center. The projected path for the hurricane has it reaching the US coast on Sunday night or Monday morning.
The hurricane would make landfall somewhere between Louisiana and the Florida panhandle, based on current projections. Those projections are subject to change, and people in Florida and states along the Gulf Coast should monitor the hurricane's progress.
The Red Cross advises people to be prepared during hurricane season, and notes that the only truly irreplaceable items in one's household are a person and their family.
The Gulf Coast has already had to clean up after Tropical Storm Cindy, and 250,000 people were without electricity as a result of that storm.
