White House Adopts Security Changes

John Negroponte just got a lot more power. The White House announced today that the director of national intelligence will be given clear authority over the national security operations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as the Central Intelligence Agency.

The move from the Bush administration reflects the recommendations made by a nine-member presidential commission three months ago. The commission urged the President to make Mr. Negroponte's authority mores specific to better direct counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations and to enable better conjoined efforts between the FBI and CIA.

Mr. Negroponte will now be able to exercise authority over budgets and appointments within new security divisions to be implemented at the FBI and the Justice Department.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales praised the efforts.

"We're confident that at the end of the day the department, which has already made tremendous strides today in protecting America, will be in even better position to further protect American from additional terrorism," Mr. Gonzales said.

FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, in typical charismatic form, stated the obvious.

"We see the recommendations of the W.M.D. Commission, which have been adopted by the president, as being the next step in the development of the bureau's national security capabilities," said Mueller.
