Samsung 4Gbit NAND Memory In Production

The highest density flash device begins to move into mass production at the Korean electronics firm.

The high-capacity flash memory chip retains data even after power to a device containing it has been turned off. And, Samsung claims the high write speed of 16MB/second will allow for storage of high-definition video.

Samsung will produce the chip using its 70-nanometer process, which will make the smallest memory chip in the industry.

The chip may take as much as 30 percent of the $8 billion USD market for 4Gbit flash devices, according to Gartner Dataquest.

Digital cameras and mobile phones will be the main destinations for the chips, and should begin reaching the market before the busy US holiday purchasing season.
