Since the official beta launch of the Google Maps satellite technology feature, integrating real time satellite photos with online map services has become all the rage.
With this type of technology becoming so popular, it's no suprise to find other companies working to introduce a satellite imaging service as well. With this in mind, Bill Gates, speaking at the D Conference, has announced Microsoft's intentions to introduce their own satellite map service called MSN Virtual Earth.
According to the SearchEngineWatch Blog, MSN Virtual Earth will provide the following:
While it's true MSN Virtual Earth will make use of satellite imaging technology, the service will be more like Google Earth as opposed to Google Maps.
With the Gates announcement this afternoon, apparently Yahoo is the only one of the big three (Google, MSN Search, Yahoo) to be lacking a satellite map service. Although, I wouldn't expect Yahoo to be the odd man out for long.

Google has already taken a big bite of the pie when it comes to market share with these services. Heck, they almost wiped mapquest off the charts! I guess we will wait and see how microsoft pulls this one off. It seems to me that they are trying to go head to head with google, even more than Yahoo!
