There is an overlooked search preference that I have changed to improve my Google searching. You'll find it in the Preferences settings that you can get to from nearly any Google search page.
It's the Number of Search Results, which defaults to 10 results per page. I find that with only 10 results per page that I am usually scrolling through many pages of search results. Why not just display more to start with? On the Search Preferences page, look for the Number of Search Results area:
You can make this setting 10,20,30,50 or 100 results per page. I like to set it to 100, but 50 might be enough for some. It does take a bit more time for Google to display the results, but then again you don't have to keep clicking to go forward and backward through as many pages.
Extra related tip: Make a change the Search Language section to only search for pages in languages that you understand. This can thin the search results down quite a bit.
