Google Releases Video Upload Tool For Mac, Linux

The Google Video Upload Program is the search engine's attempt to embrace the growing vlogging movement, while improving the quality of their Video Search index.

In order to facilitate prospective submitters, Google provides a video upload tool. However, in order to do so, submitters have to run an .exe file (provided by Google), which happens to be non-compatible with Mac and Linux users.

Because Google does not want to alienate either environment, software engineer R.P. Hughes developed a Mac/Linux compatible video uploader, written in Java. R.P. revealed his work on the Google Blog, and he also issued a post explaining his motivations:

But this time, I took it as a personal challenge. I shoot a lot of video, and I edit it on my Mac. How hard could it be to write a compatible video uploader that would run everywhere? As I soon discovered, not very hard at all. After all, I have access to the C++ source code for the existing Windows-specific uploader, and I can spend my 20% time working on whatever I want.

Because Java follows the "Write once, run anywhere" mantra, R.P. felt this was the best language to accomplish cross-platform compatibility with.

If you are a Mac or Linux user and are interested in contributing to Google Video, please apply here.
