Some BitTorrent sites have been directing traffic for the exchange of television programs online.
The black market for general television programs has grown just like the one for pirated movies. The MPAA wants to put a stop to that as well.
The Motion Picture Association of America filed suit against six sites it accuses of being BitTorrent conduits for television shows. The sites sued Thursday are ShunTV, Zonatracker, Btefnet, Scifi-Classics, CDDVDHeaven and Bragginrights.
Cnet News reports that MPAA CEO Dan Glickman said in a statement: "Every television series depends on other markets (such as) syndication and international sales to earn back the enormous investment required to produce the comedies and dramas we all enjoy. Those markets are substantially hurt when that content is stolen."
BitTorrent technology allows users to download large files, like multimedia ones, much faster than a typical Internet connection might permit. Organizations like the MPAA allege the technology is widely used to distribute movies illegally.
