Bluetooth Sinks In To UWB

For a while, Bluetooth Special Interest Group kept their support of Universal Wideband inside the conference room. But now, for the first time, Bluetooth has publicly declared an interest in cooperating with UWB to combine efforts with Bluetooth radio.

Mike Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG, seems to think that combining the two local area radio systems is a good idea, producing new high-speed applications and reducing fragmentation.

Creating a structure of combined attributes of UWB's high-speeds and Bluetooth's low costs and low energy usage is Bluetooth's main goal.

According to Foley, UWB would benefit from a stronger market position and Bluetooth's infrastructure, allowing UWB to reach market maturity at a faster pace.

The merger does come with certain challenges. Compatibility issues with as well as global regulation of UWB are at the forefront of the challenges.
