McDonald's Celebrates Anniversary of First Restaurant

Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of when the first McDonald's was opened in Des Plaines, Illinois by Ray Kroc.

Now there are over 30,000 McDonald's restaurants in 119 countries around the world.

An Ireland On-line article goes into a bit of the history of what is perhaps the most famous restaurant chain in the world:

"Kroc had mortgaged his home and invested his entire life savings to become the exclusive distributor of a five-spindled milkshake maker called the Multimixer.

When in 1954 he visited the hamburger stand run by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California, which ran eight Multimixers at a time, inspiration struck.

Impressed by the number of people being served so quickly, he pitched the idea of opening up several restaurants to the brothers, convinced that he could sell eight of his Multimixers to each and every one."

The article goes on to talk about the first Ronald McDonald who was played by Willard Scott, the Company's IPO, and a little Big Mac trivia among other things.

McDonald's opened a new restaurant in Chicago on its birthday.
