An archeological discovery in Ethiopia may age human history by almost 40,000 years because of the fossil's age. The current oldest was thought to be 130,000 years old.

Geochronologist Professor Ian McDougall, from the Australian National University discovered a skull that dates back 195,000 years, 40,000 more than previous discoveries. According to The Age

"The age of 195,000 years for modern humans is very close to that estimated from genetic studies, related to the origin of Homo sapiens," Professor McDougall said of the findings published in the Nature journal.

"We've pushed the origin back about 40,000 years."

The remains from the Kibish Formation, adjacent to the Omo River in southern Ethiopia, were originally discovered by palaeontologists in 1967, and were previously thought to be 130,000 years old.
