Yesterday, news broke of a malicious Trojan virus, called Troj/BankAsh-A, which targets Microsoft's AntiSpyware beta tool.

Internet security firm Sophos issued a press release documenting the Trojan's attack methods. Not only does Troj/BankAsh-A target Microsoft AntiSpyware (MAS), it's primary attack may have been aimed at "users of UK online banks such as Barclays, Cahoot, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide, NatWest, and Smile."

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, had this to say "More and more malware is being written by criminals, designed to steal bank account information from innocent computer users. All internet users need to ensure their computers are properly defended with the latest up-to-date protection software, and make sure they are not putting themselves in jeopardy."

Because Troj/BankAsh-A also tries to disable MAS, Microsoft has responded by investigating these claims. According to VNUNet.com

Microsoft confirmed that it is "actively investigating" new reports of the Trojan, but is not aware of any significant customer impact resulting from BankAsh-A.

"Microsoft will continue to work with law enforcement and the industry to help protect customers from these types of threat," it said.

"We also encourage users to use extreme caution when opening unsolicited files from known and unknown sources. Microsoft continues to recommend customers to evaluate the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta."
