India, Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement for a natural gas pipeline from Myanmar to Bengal and Bihar through Bangladeshi territory.
"The government of Myanmar (Burma) agrees to export natural gas to India by pipeline through the territory of Bangladesh," says a statement from energy ministers of the three countries.
According to Mizzima.com, The statement came after a two-day meeting of India Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar with Bangladesh's State Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources AKM Mosharraf Hossain and Burmese Energy Minister Brigadier General Lun Thi at Burma's capital.
"I think it is a triumph and major breakthrough because, for the first time in 30 years, Bangladesh has agreed to its territory being used for transport of any commodity, let alone something as valuable as natural gas," Mani Shankar Aiyar said.
The pipeline will be 290 km long and is estimated to cost up to $1 billion.
