In response to the buzz surrounding its GMail launch, Google's founders have said that GMail is NOT a hoax.
Google's Example of When NOT to do a Press Release
Google announced the launch of GMail yesterday, March 31, 2004. The announcement had message boards and news outlets buzzing about the possibility of GMail being a joke. Google is known for having a sense of humor and embracing April Fools Day.
Speaking to Reuters about GMail, Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's vice president of products said, "It is not a hoax."
This means that Google is now poised to challenge Yahoo and MSN as a leading web portal instead of the two companies challenging Google for search engine supremacy. Because Google is offering 1 gigabyte of storage per user, GMail will have the largest email storage capabilities any email service.
MSN and Yahoo offer 4 megabytes of storage for non-premium members. Google's 1 gig of storage is for ALL users at no charge.
