Yahoo announced that it was releasing a web page ranking tool. Similar to Google's PageRank, Webrank is integrated into Yahoo's newest version of their search toolbar, called Yahoo Companion.
Yahoo's and Google's respective toolbars do have fundamental differences. Google's PageRank is based on URL popularity, whereas Yahoo's system ranks pages based on amount of web traffic.
Yahoo's toolbar collects click data to allow Yahoo Slurp to spider new content. This data alerts " the Yahoo! Search crawler to the existence of a particular Web site or Web page, and direct a crawler to visit that Web site or Web page for inclusion in Yahoo..."
Webrank works by collecting URL data about the page you are visiting. This data is then sent to Yahoo's servers and analyzed. Then it is returned to the companion with the URL's appropriate Webrank.
Yahoo! has not made any official announcments about the beta product. It is currently in test and subject to modification based on user feedback
