Indonesia Chooses Motorola for 3G Network

Indonesia's largest telecommunications carrier has chosen wireless player Motorola to provide next generation wireless services to the ten provinces of Sumatra.

PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia said it would use Motorola's CDMA2000 1X system (define), which will bring 3G, or third generation wireless services to a major swath of Indonesia. Sumatra is one of Indonesia's largest groups of islands with forty million residents.

Motorola's contract in Indonesia is its fifteenth 3G (define) deal signed around the world and seventh in the Asia-Pacific region. The initial phase of the wireless network rollout is estimated to be worth close to $30 million. The company said the network is set for commercial deployment by this month, and will run on the 800 MHz band.
