i sold a ps3 4-6 weeks ago,the item went to the buyer fully working with 4 games and 2 br dvds.
the buyer had the item over 4 days, he turn round with a email saying it was faulty when it arrived had ylod.
he also said that he didn’t sign for the item apprently it was left outside near he gate ( i got proof that he signed for the item using parcel force tracking system).
so of course he wants his money back, well i thought no ,he had plenty of time to let me know right!
then he said it was a present for some one,in the right mind if you buy any thing electrical you would check it first.
any this has been going on now for days and ebay have turned around and said that i got give his money back this is now after 4 weeks he has had the item..
can any body please advise me on this

Unfortunately Ebay can do whatever it wants & frequently ignores its own policies- so informing you of some stated ebay policy has no value. Before ebay debits your account, they need proof that the item has been returned BUT it does not require that the original item shipped be returned OR that it be returned in its original condition. Sellers have no rights, prepare to loose your shirt/money/merchandise.

SELLERS need some rights on ebay, here are a few of my suggestions:

    1) the right to be free from extortion. Buyers can demand extra money to cover RETURN shipping or threaten seller with a negative feedback.

    2) the right to know what SIGNIFICANT difference was found in a sellers ad to warrant a forced return of a sold item.

    3) the right to have sellers “clearly” stated policies enforced

    4) the right to have negative feedback removed if it could be proved that a buyer did not follow ebay’s or sellers policies.

I completely agree with you. I do not understand how BUYERS have more rights than SELLERS -when we are the ones PAYING THE FEES? Will someone please explain that to me. They are making a mint off of US, while the BUYERS have all the power. I am about done with Ebay. I have people complaining about shipping….I am listing items at .99 ($200 suits) to try to give people great merchandise at great prices because our government is screwing all of us everywhere we turn. Then because they have to pay $6-$11.00 for shipping depending on how heavy the product is, I get a nick against me for high SHIPPING AND HANDLING. This is a business people. You are paying for my listing fees and paying through Paypal as well. DUH> I am about completely through with Ebay. SELLERS have no recourse against a BUYER, but a BUYER can screw you so you can’t sell anymore. EXCUSE ME. Especially when a BUYER doesn’t pay. THEY DO NOTHING TO THEM> Bull—. I’m over it. I’m about to boycott them.

    FOR MITCH WAPEN.

I have been selling for years on ebay… My conclusion is go thru a reseller. If you try to sell it yourself these resellers will file false complaints against you and you will be kicked out one fine day..

An insider of ebay mentioned that since the seller community is growing rapidly , ebay is finding and fighting hard to quality control their domain , thus eliminating honest and dishonest sellers.

    Try other venues like : http://www.ubid.com , http://www.onsale.com , http://www.jewelrygrabber.com , http://www.buy.com

    thanks.

Are we to give up on the best known marketing tool? OR organize to gain sellers rights! Does moving to a different auction website open up a different can of worms?

      • Teresa

Maybe we should all sign a petition and take it to the guy who owns and Facebook and have him start a company like Ebay and give those jerks a run for their money.

I am having problems obtaining a seller’s contact detail 6 months after an auction ended (for a warranty issue). Ebay tell me they cannot provide them. My take on this is that I should request the seller’s contact details every time I buy anything on Ebay, in case I need them later – does anyone have another solution?

    • Guest

Sometimes ebays record of the sale has a phone number, I can see it through selling mgr, items sold, find the item and click on the $ amount hyperlink, OR web search the buyers name and address- for the phone number, OR sometimes buyers email address contains a business name or partial name- that could be web searched.

I sold some goods through Ebay. I stated in the add that I had no expertise in the item I was selling and no one should be unless they were happy with the information. The buyer said that it was incorrectly described. To avoid problems I offered a refund when the goods arrived back.
PayPal refunded the buyer even though I have not had the goods back and come out in favour of the buyer. I now have lost my goods and no payment thanks to PayPal. What a scam!

  6. Our company playerarmory.de started to do MMORPG gold and Powerleveling services via ebay since the end of 2007. We sell virtual golds like world of warcraft gold, metin2 yang, etc. Since our articles are more like a service instead of a product, we’ve met numerous problems with ebay.

First, ebay suspended my account once without notice!, because i changed a letter in my lastname, “oe” with “

  7. Kay

In the last two weeks I have had to give away 8 items to buyers just to try and keep my 100% feedback rating. I have been with Ebay as a buyer and seller since 2001 and I cannot believe how much they have flushed a good thing down the toilet. Not only can I not leave negative feedback for buyers who have clearly used Ebay’s new policies to their advantage I have also been out PayPal’s Fees Ebay’s Fees and the items I was selling including the shipping fees I have to eat because Ebay puts a block on shipping fees. For instance, a book going from MD to CA cost 7.98 with insurance (because God forbid you send something uninsured) but Ebay only allows you to charge 4.00. And if you ship it media mail the buyers are mad because it took too long to get to them. Well, after these few things I have listed end…in two days, it is so long for good to Ebay and PayPal…I hope they sink in to the pit they created. Hey Ebay..here’s a clue…without sellers you won’t have buyers..it takes two!

I would like to report this situation to find out if it only happening to us. I have sold skullcandy earbuds on Ebay, since long time ago. Suddendly about two month ago my listing were cancelled by ebay, allegating that my skullcandy earbuds were not originals and that a vero program member reported them as not originals.

All our earbuds come from very good source, local retail store clearances. I sent the vero member program all my receipts showing where I bought the items and also I sent actual photos of my skullcandy inventory…

They have not responded since 1 month ago that I sent my proof and eventhough, I have email them serveral times…Ebay has suspended my account for 30 days and it is not allowing me to sell the skullcandy earbuds…

One day I started looking whom else was selling skull….earbuds on ebay. For my great surprise there is a member with an id skullcandyinc…. Are these people the real skullcandy inc company?…. Are they trying to damage the image of other sellers just to stop other people to sell their earbuds on ebay…?

If this is the case, do not think this is fair, nor I think this is the correct way of cambating the skullcandy informal market . If they are the real skullcandy Inc they should legally prohibit selling skullcandy earbuds in the internet other than their official site…at least if that is what they want….

I personally do not think this people are the real skullcandy inc. company, that created this account to damage others……

Have someone else have this same negative experience selling skullcandy on ebay?…

Another ebay member told me to sue them. Is this worth it..? Sue whom, Skullcandy Inc, or the fake skullcandy Inc. Command give me a break, too much trouble just to sell a product, that by the way is not giving me such a big profit????

This is totally unfair and frustrating…

I find ebay business practices unethical.
They can create the rules irrespective of UK law as they are based in Dublin and the USA. UK Trading Standards can not intervene. You either agree to their rules or you do not trade with them. This is fine if you are a business and you can subscribe to the Sale of Good act etc. but if you are a private seller they can insist you become a business seller or you cannot sell. I listed a lot of items on the free listing days, and then (as happened to me) are instantly required to change from a private to a business seller whilst listings were in progress. This happened to me this month and I found myself unable to revise or alter my lisitngs before they ended. As I am not running a business but selling off possessions – I can’t ethically register as a business. Ebay has suspended my right to sell until I comply with their policy. It is unethical to require a non-business seller to trade as a business with all the restrictions and legal obligations this imposes. This is bullybay tactics. Obviously no person in their right mind would continue to sell under these conditons when you could set up your own website or use another internet auction site. I’m now waiting for my recent fees to be invoiced to me and then I’ll terminate my account. The people who have lost out most are purchasers and ebay. My advice -
Ebay business practices are rubbish – don’t touch it with a bargepole! Sell elsewhere.
Ebay changes the legal rules in the middle of a contract – well I think this is against the law – except who is going to take them to court?
you cannot talk to a senior manager who can make decisions – the minions on the end of the phone fob you off
    ebay listing charges are high
feedback from buyers can’t be challenged
If you don’t like their practices and decisons – tough! There no independent arbitration proceedures – they are GOD and you are dirt
    In conclusion:
Ebay is not a good business to trade with unless you are a very large company
So I say – Ebay SUCKS – take your business elsewhere.
    You have been warned!

Ebay sellers since 1999.Wonderfull expierence turned int a nightmare for a myself as a seller. If there was a feedback allowed for Ebay services to sellers the percentage would be 0.It is complete frustation.I thought ebay was a icon of free enterprise where if you dont provide a good product nobody will buy from you.Sellers are at the mercy of the buyer with the backing of ebay.I beleive that ebay no longer want sellers that fall into my catagory. It has been a great expierience but it is time to move on.

  11. Worried husband

My wife has worked really hard to build up a successful ebay business in her retirement, she sells on auctions and has a shop. She charges a fair price for the goods, packages everything beautifully, measures everything and takes indepth photographs and puts detailed descriptions, and I take everything sold to the post office at 4pm each day and send by whatever method agreed with the buyer. My wife has no issue with the ebay fees other than that she is paying money and getting no support from the company.

Despite this, she still gets bad feedback from some purchasers; they complain if they cannot get into an item; it is not my wife’s fault that they have ordered the wrong size, she tells them to return it, gives full refunds for postage, and sometimes even sends a gift, ……but they still have the option to leave bad feedback, eg wrong size. She measures the length, but then they say it’s too short or too long……what more can she do? There are some people who just do not read the descriptions properly, eg, this dress had 3/4 length sleeves measuring .. . from under arm to end of sleeve, then………someone complains that the sleeves are too short or too long or dont look the same as the photograph. What more can she do??

Then there are the people who have a dress for the weekend, wear it and then send it back saying it is stained, or ripped, or not the right size. It is obvious it has been worn, it is brand new when sent out and has deodrant marks when returned and even smells of sweat, one was covered in red wine when returned. There is absolutely nothing that she can do, if she refuses to refund then they open a dispute, which the buyer pretty much always wins and they still have the option to leave bad feedback stars even if she returns all their money and postage. On one occasion I purchased an item from the Woollen Mill for my wife’s birthday and she sold it on ebay because it wasn’t to her taste and the store is a long way from where we live in Scotland. The person who bought it said it was a fake and had been worn and returned it, and left very bad feedback stating that my wife had sold a fake. My wife was so upset and she was unable to do anything about it. I took the item back to the store where I bought it and they gave me a letter of authenticity which I sent to the buyer, she never replied.

I have been looking at some seller’s history and have a theory that some unscrupulous sellers are buying cheaply priced items from their competitors and leaving bad star ratings, this gets rid of them and puts them at the top, I can’t prove this though as ebay do not let the seller see who gives the ratings. I also wonder if ebay manipulate the star sysem in any way? How would we know as it is all anonymous? I am sure that such a ‘highly thought of’ multinational company would not stoop to such practices!

It’s time ebay realised that they need both buyers and sellers to make their business successful and if the sellers leave and all theyre left with is the big multi national stores how long do they think that they will survive? The multi nationals use ebay because of the little sellers, if they leave then the multi nationals will soon go as well and just run their own websites and ebay will die a death.

I used ebay a lot in the early years of my retirement, I bought and sold all the time, specialising mainly in model cars, I would not touch it with a barge pole now. I am just so disappointed that they have absolutely no regard for sellers such as my wife who has put her heart and soul into her business and risks losing her livelihood if they do not begin to support their sellers.

Of course there are some unscrupulous sellers out there, but Ebay must realise that there are also unscrupulous buyers and some who just think it amusing to leave poor feedback for a seller. Unscrupulous sellers soon get weeded out because people do not buy from them. Thousands of buyers have bought from my wife and many are regular customers. I have told her that she should bypass ebay with them and deal on the phone, but she wont do this, she is a lady of integrity.

I often answer the telephone calls from some of these buyers and find some of them rude abusive and ignorant, all the seller can do is block them, but there is nothing stopping them from coming back under another name and starting a vindictive campaign. Someone telephoned and asked a question and was abusive to me because she could not understand my Scottish accent.

Then you get the ones who just do not understand the system, like the lady that I drove and delivered an item to her personally that she wanted for a wedding. She was absolutely thrilled, My wife gave her a gift to compliment the item to wear at the wedding, she sent me a lovely card thanking me via my wife………….her feedback was neutral!!!!! I obviously have no idea of what the star rating was. I think she did not understand the importance of the feedback.

So come on ebay get fair please!!!! Orrrrrrrr if you don’t I think that someone soon is going to usurp you.

It is so sad that I am unable to give my name and address, the reaon that I can’t is that my wife would be scared that ebay would delete her account for critisising them. And………she doesnt actually know I’m writing this

What sort of a way is this to run a business? It’s ‘bully boy tactics’ and intimidation.

I have bought and sold on Ebay for 10 years. However, over the last few months…since this feedback policy change…it has been a nightmare to sell on ebay! There is no support for sellers! I have had buyers report items as fakes (when they are not), damaged (when they are not), after payment…put a stop pay on funds because they claim items were not received, just not pay at all…etc. They get to leave negative if I refuse to refund…and even if I do refund…and I get to leave nothing! There are buyers who are abusing Ebay’s new system…and me, as a small seller, is suffering from it. My feedback is ruined…and I no longer want to sell on Ebay. The fees are high, and I am at the mercy of buyers who are abusing the feedback system. Ebay does very little to help me as a seller…and I’m fed up! I am closing my ebay account on Monday.

Had a perfect record until I had to end an auction after a couple of hours due to the thing I was selling got fried while plugging it in. (Freak accident) so I attempted to contact the one bidder and canceled the bid and the auction.

The buy guick tried to use “Buy it now” to get the item anyway.. (I have no idea why if it wasn’t working) and gave negative feedback. I filled out all the forms, contacte who needed contacting, all through ebay, and no help at all.

Finally got the “Trust” department on the phone and they said. “The sellers do not need protecting, the buyers do”

Sellers will get screwed, even by non paying bidders, and there is nothing anyone can do.

I was searching for articles about Ebay today and found yours. It mirrors my complete frustration with Ebay. I no longer sell or buy on Ebay, despite having been a member since 2000.

I had a perfect record, until one buyer in the US (I’m in Canada) insisted I had to ship to him via USPS – which is impossible. He was abusive and said I was 1)lieing, everyone sends using the US postal service, 2) cheating him because if we used USPS the shipping would be cheaper 3) didn’t believe I was Canadian and was just trying to cheat him. All this despite the fact I clearly post where the item was coming from and what the shipping was.

He not only left negative feedback, he lodged a complaint asked for both the item AND a refund and screwed me royally. Talking to Ebay was an utter waste of time. I took a hit and was suspended from selling for awhile. Ultimately his demand for a refund was denied, but the negative marks stood. How fair is this? I honoured my part of the sale, sent the item quickly, for the amount originally posted on the page and still got screwed. Since that time, I ran into problems with other buyers contacting me after the sale demanding lower shipping rates (despite seeing the posted rates) or they would leave negative feedback. Once again, Ebay did nothing to address my concerns.

I have completely stopped using Ebay and have since moved to another online company. There will always be problem buyers, but Ebay seems to be encouraging a culture of abuse. Given the competition out there for my dollar, I see no reason for anyone (buyer or seller) to put up with this nonsense. Ebay hasn’t made a penny off of me about a year now, but their competitor is doing nicely now.

I have been selling on ebay for a couple of years. It only takes one fraud buyer to ruin it for me, This buyer originally claimed to not receive two shipments- asked for refund on first and demanded replacement on second, which I obliged. I did some checking into the feedback buyer left for others. This buyer had repeated pattern of not receiving items, getting refunds, etc. Then I come to find out that the items are sent to a “neighbor”. The replacement item she received from me arrived opened and bent, according to buyer claim. I repeatedly reported this buyer to ebay for violating the buyer protection policy- nothing done. The buyer can make any they wish to receive their items for free. They know how to work the system very well. What a shame ebay will not do something.

    Hi,
You have no rights as a seller on ebay, they only listen to the buyer.
I had a buyer open a case against me regarding a pair of boots she purchased and said they were ‘defective’ as one was smaller in size. I asked her to return them so I could get them inspected and measured, which I did and there was no size difference and they were as listed. Her shoe size was smaller than mine and they were a generous size, so I think they were actually too big for her. I telephoned ebay and also emailed their customer support to which I had no reply. I tried to escalate the case in the resolution centre, but it would not let me. Then when the 10 days had finished to find a solution, the buyer asked ebay to review the case and they would respond within 72 hrs. Within 15 mins I had an email saying they had issued her a full refund to which they had already held out of my paypal account, and also as the case was closed I lose my final credit fee being returned. They had no interest in my side of the story, only the buyers, and she had clearly lied just to get a refund. I tried to appeal, but they said they had made their decision and basically they didn’t want to know. I have been selling on ebay for around 6 years and have 100% feedback so how fair is that for me being honest in the first place!

  16. I got so fed up with ebays fee hikes and just the mass confusion at. I’ve moved all my stuff to another site. The site allows me to avoid all the ebay fees and helps me make 4 to 5 times profit when compared to their cost of selling. Its worked out well, I invite you all

Does anyone have a suggestion for another venue to sell my discontinued and overstock products? Ebay is such a pain to deal with and its policies are put in place to try and make me as a Seller feel like they are doing me a favor.

One of my biggest complaints is their limiting of sales if you get dings on your account. My account has dings because Shipping Costs are too high according to some of my customers. I’ve clearly outlined the costs beforehand, used the Ebay Shipping Calculator to determine those costs, and even offer UPS Ground and USPS Flat Rate for all of my customers. I have no control over what those companies charge for delivery yet my account is limited because Buyers don’t give me a good ranking on my Shipping Costs.

As of this month, Ebay has also starting rolling the shipping costs into the amount they figure their percentage cut to determine your final selling fees. It never ends.

I’m sick of dealing with the nonsense of Ebay and want to find another venue — any suggestions?

i always hear people saying ebay and paypal sucks theres no protection for the seller
eg if i were to buy an item and pay through pay through paypal the seller is not protected. They get their money, but if i were to put in a copmplaint to paypal saying i didnt get the item or it’s broken paypal blocks their account. They do an “”investigation” which is always in favour of the buyer. They wont listen to the seller even if they show proof the item was sent eg receipt for express or registered post. Paypal then takes the money out of the sellers account and givves it back to the buyer. So they basically screw the seller and aid the crimianl activies of buyers(no i dont do this myself i dont even have a payapl account)

  19. bob

I am not happy with ebay since the changes, i have lost almost £50 a month in seller discount for a reason i dont know. I only have good positive feedback and ebay will not tell me who has given me low DSR’s so how can i sort out any problem

  20. Dx

I really hate Ebay now. I have been a member since 2006 and had a 500 positive rating ever since. That is until the past 2 months. Now the 3 of the last 20 items I have sold the buyers have said something was wrong with my item and opened a dispute. Even though the item was in perfect condition, the buyer did not want the item and then made up a lie like “the item was not as described” with no description of what was not described and Ebay turned about and refunded the money to the buyer. When I received all 3 items bac (each one was a different item and a different price) all 3 were in perfect condition. 2 of the buyers left negative feedback. One only had 3 stars and the other buyer had 20 stars feedback rating. I even spoke to an Ebay person on the phone and asked them why are they refunded the buyers the money when there is nothing wrong with the item. Ebay’s response was “the item wasn’t as described”. But I said, the item is as described and they returned the item in the same conditon – working, so how is it not as described? Ebay response was the usual “I am sorry to hear your frsutration, I understand why you are so upset, etc. etc” Now after a 6 year of a perfect score I now am in the below 100% rating, and all for a couple of buyers simply not wanting an item and just wanting to return it without cause. I have talking to many people and Ebay has turned into a 30 refund policy like a major store such as a Target or Walmart. On some of my sales I put down NO RETURNS or 3 Day Returns only, and I was still forced to refund the money when a buyer went 15 days past the return date and decided he didn’t like it, and another buyer said I didn’t send it fast enough and he wanted to return it because he missed a show he was going to use the item on. But he didn’t say that to Ebay. Instead he said the “item was not as described” and Ebay refunded his money. Plus he left a negative feedback. To this date 8-6-2011 I had sold over 17,000 dollars in sales on Ebay. I have sold cars, high end music equipment, and high end video equipment. I have paid over $1,800 dollars in fees to Ebay and Paypal alone in the 17,000 sales. The sellers who are the ones Ebay makes money off of, not the buyers. The buyers don’t get charged for listing an item, the buyer doesn’t get charged if the item sells (FVF) The buyer doesn’t get charged a percentage if money is received through Paypal. But the buyer has more rights than the seller. How is this possible? How can a buyer leave a negative and the seller cannot return one? How can a buyer make up a lie and Ebay will always rule in favor of the buyer even though it is clearly stated in the Ebay ad “NO REUTURNS”. As of today I am no longer selling on Ebay. I believe as a seller I was making Ebay a good amount of money through selling fees. But if this is the way they are going to treat buyers, then they can be with one less good seller. Eventually Ebay will fall on its head and will try to bring back buyers with all kinds of compensations but it will be too late. We the sellers will find another source and Ebay will crumble. 6 years of positive feedbacks and it only took 2 negatives and 3 returns all within the last 2 months for me to call it quits. Take it easy fellow Ebay members. If you ever come to this site and read my post, it happened to me. So what are you going to do?

I do not want to sell on ebay, why? no solution for the problem occurred, there is no answer at the time, do not protect the sellers, high fees …

  23. Linda Reynolds

I have to agree ebay sellers are screwed. After selling for 13 years paypal is now withholding my funds made from sales because ebay says I’m one tenth of one percent over the allotted “item not as described” dsr. Most of my “item not as described” dings come from sellers that didn’t read the description or the fact that the USPS and/or UPS broke the item in transit. Full refunds were given to the buyers but according to ebay they are “entitled to their opinion”.
Is Walmart threatened to be put out of business because a plate was broken that the sent to a person a year ago and that “ding” is still on their record.
The whole thing is absurd. I’ll be selling on another site.

  24. Can anyone please tell me how to report cheating ebay sellers. i am an ebay seller for almost 3 yrs and there is one guy who buys from himself (use another account) he makes it so obvious by buying huge amount like 2000 units of the same item. who on earth needs that many units?? PLEASE HELP ME.. As im so over ebay… P.S im in australia

I was interested in this article because of the problems I had with PayPal. This included identity theft. Whoever runs PayPal is very irresponsible; it is very easy to get this very bad problem. I had another awful time trying to close the account. I am not a seller, but only a buyer, and believe me, I buy very little on eBay these days because I can no longer send a check. Sellers, if you really want to max out your customer base, please continue to complain about this bizarre policy. I know of others who now won’t make a single purchase on eBay because of myriad PayPal problems. Yes, it takes more time with a check or MO, but it’s certainly safer than PayPal. Thanks to all the good sellers who have worked with me over the years; I have never given any negative feedback, always try to boost a seller’s prospects. No problems at all with sellers, just with that negative payment system.
