The Secret to Getting More Diggs?

Telegraph is Doing Something Right

Get the WebProNews Newsletter:

Every content site wants its stories to reach the front page of Digg. And why wouldn’t they? It can be a tremendous source of traffic. How do you do this though?

You encourage your users to Digg your content.

Telegraph on Digg At least that’s what UK’s Telegraph does, and it seems to be working. The site has a widget that not only displays its most “dugg” stories, but encourages readers to digg their favorite stories.

"This in turn helps Telegraph stories to move up the Digg rankings, meaning that more should reach the front page. Looking at the Hitwise data, the strategy seems to have worked," says Hitwise’s Robin Goad. "As the chart below illustrates, the amount of downstream traffic that Digg sends to the Telegraph has increased significantly over the last 12 months."

Goad shares another interesting chart as well, looking at the top ten sites that have the most content "dugg." Anybody who has spent more than a sliver of time on Digg will not be surprised to find Cracked topping the list.

Top 10 Most Dugg Sites

The fact that this list is dominated by US sites could be construed as a testament to Telegraph’s strategy as well. It has only slightly less that Cracked, and Digg has far more users in the US. Seven of the top ten are American sites.

What i’m afraid is that a webpage’s loading time might be reduced due to the heavy widget.. Good sharing anyway.

Makes sense. Tell visitors what to do and guess what? They’ll do it!

Digg traffic has less conversion rate ( In my case ) . I m getting more revenue from natural search engine traffic . But it really helps in improving traffic rankings in various sites like Alexa . compete etc . In my 2 years of digging , I experimented with anchor text ,description etc . But unfortunately the results were pathetic .

Content sites like The Telegraph monetise using page views so any traffic is lucrative.

That said, I’m working on ways to target traffic that brings in more page views per user, which is quite a challenge.

I work for a UK rival of The Telegraph and this makes me green with envy.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • I’ve come up from behind someone in the left lane only to find out that they were on the phone and yes even texting while driving, I could care less about your liberty when you endanger my life or safety for the sake of a call that could have wated until your were home. I’ve been trapped behind people on their phones for as long as 10 to 15 minutes while they slow down then speed up and slow down again oblivious to the road or others around them.
