  • Saturday, June 15th marks the official 26th birthday of the GIF. Yahoo has pulled together some GIF search stats to celebrate.

According to the company, 71% of searches for [gifs] come from men, and [swifts disgusted reaction gif] is amongst the top 10 GIF-related search terms in June.

    Here’s the story on that.

“People want to make their own GIFs,” a Yahoo spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Searches for [gif creators] are off the charts this month on Yahoo!”

Yahoo says [What is a gif] searches have been “off the charts” in the past 30 days, and [Funny gifs] searches are up 85% this month. Searches for [gifs] in general are up 35% this month. Here’s the breakdown by age:

  • 7% come from those under 20
  • 20% come from those 21-29
  • 15% come from those 30-34
  • 19% come from those 35-44
  • 22% come from those 45-54
  • 17% come from those over 55
  • Other popular GIF searches, Yahoo says, include: [one direction gifs], [sexy gifs], and [animated gifs]. Here are the top ten GIF searches on Yahoo from the past 30 days:

    1.[sex gifs]
    2. [animated gifs]
    3. [gif creators]
    4. [funny gifs]
    5. [what is a gif]
    6. [what does gif mean]
    7. [what does gif stand for]
    8. [swifts disgusted reaction gif]
    9. [happy mothers day gif]
    10. [one direction funny gifs]

Perhaps the most interesting part about the GIF’s birthday is that after twenty-six years, the image format is as popular as it has ever been. Google has even added a new feature to make animated GIFs easier to find in recent months, and allowed Google+ users to start using them as their profile pics. Even the White House is getting in on animated GIFs.

Yahoo itself, of course, is acquiring Tumblr, which is Animated GIF Central.

Just remember, this is how you pronounce GIF. Now, here’s a video of some famous GIFs set to music:
