A new top-level domain dedicated to travel business-related web sites, .travel, has been approved by ICANN.

The .travel domain will be administered by TheGlobe.com unit Tralliance Corp, AP reports. Travel industry groups have been working to identify businesses eligible for registering a .travel domain, but the registrar itself will not be performing checks on businesses that register; visitors will want to take steps to ensure they’re dealing with a legitimate business.

Most of the sites that will appear with .travel in their domain names will be commercial ventures. It looks like individuals or non-commercial travel ventures could be excluded from registering a .travel domain.

Transportation ventures like airlines, bus lines, trains, and cruise lines can apply for .travel domains. The report also lists casinos, hotels, and travel agents as eligible applicants.

Other businesses peripheral to transportation and destinations, like luggage makers, could be eligible for .travel sites in the future, a Tralliance executive noted in the report. It is likely existing sites with a .com name will keep that domain and redirect to a .travel destination.
