Tech media publishing company Ziff Davis announced today that it has acquired Toolbox.com, a popular IT online community network.

“We’ve added a critical piece to our puzzle with the acquisition of Toolbox.com,” said Ziff Davis CEO Vivek Shah. “The IT community relies on itself to make decisions and be informed. Owning the leading professional networking site is a significant strategic advantage for Ziff Davis.”

Toolbox.com will become part of Ziff Davis’ B2B Focus, which was formed when the company acquired Focus Research.

This makes the fourth acquisition for Ziff Davis in the past year.

Toolbox.com has 2.3 million registered members.

Ziff Davis sites already reach 40 million per month. Properties include: PCMag, BuyerBase, LogicBuy, Geek.com, ExtremeTech, AppScout and B2B Focus.

Following in the footsteps of other publishers, Ziff Davis said today it will drop the print edition of its popular PCMag and will focus on its online property PCMag.com.

In October The Christian Science Monitor made the announcement that it was ending its daily print format to move online in April of 2009.

Ziff Davis says the final print issue of PCMag will be published in January 2009. The PCMag Digital Network attracts more than seven million unique monthly visitors, which is ten times the circulation of the print publication.

"Moving our flagship property to an all-digital format is the final step in an evolutionary process that has been playing out over the last seven years," stated Jason Young, CEO of Ziff Davis Media.

"Since 2000, online has been the focal point where technology buyers get their information and technology marketers are directing their dollars to drive demand and build their brands."

Lance Ulanoff, Editor-in-Chief of the PCMag Digital Network said in an open letter to readers on PCMag.com that deciding to abandon the print edition of the magazine was not an easy one.

"The reality is that the ever-growing expense of print and delivery was turning the creation of a physical product into an untenable business proposition."
