Yahoo7, which is the product of a partnership between Yahoo and the Seven Network in Australia, is now also part of the group buying phenomenon. Yahoo7 announced today that it’s acquired Spreets, a group buying site with 500,000 members.

Reports indicate that Spreets sold for $40 million – the same amount it’s supposed to have saved consumers in the last year, coincidentally. Meanwhile, hard data confirms that Spreets is the biggest group buying site in Australia and New Zealand, despite being in business for just a year.

Otherwise, an official statement explained, "The Yahoo!7 business delivers a new audience to the Spreets site through distribution on the Yahoo!7 Network as well as access to the benefits provided in Australia and New Zealand through its joint venture partners Yahoo! Inc. and the Seven Media Group, including marketing and promotions."

So much more growth may soon occur.

This development is supposed to help Yahoo7 branch out in terms of local and social opportunities, and will introduce a new revenue stream to boot.

One last note: Yahoo7 isn’t alone in this line of thought, as other group buying sites in Australia are backed by Microsoft and Amazon.

The company that represents a 50-50 partnership between Yahoo and the Seven Network Limited, which is one of Australia’s largest media groups, is on the move. Yahoo7 acquired Totaltravel.com for perhaps about $17 million.

Totaltravel is, as you might imagine, a travel site. It’s a large one, too, boasting approximately 167,000 Australia- and New Zealand-centric listings. This in part explains Yahoo7′s interest in Totaltravel, since CEO Rohan Lund said in a statement, "It’s a great time to invest and we’re confident that following the acquisition we will quickly move to the number one audience position in the online travel sites in Australia."

Lund also added, "Our premium content, the ability for advertisers to target an engaged audience and the scale of Yahoo!7 will deliver the best environment for advertisers interested in a travel-minded audience."

Then here are a couple of important related notes: Australia’s domestic travel market was valued at about $56 billion last year, and the Australian Financial Review estimates that Yahoo7 paid just $17 million for Totaltravel. (Figures are converted from AU to US dollars.)

The acquisition is Yahoo7′s first, so it’ll be even more interesting than usual to see how it turns out and if any others follow in short order.

Fair warning: American readers aren’t likely to know a lot of names here. But Yahoo7 (the product of an Australian partnership between Yahoo and the Seven Network) and Telstra (an Australian telecommunications company) have been bound together by an important new mobile search agreement.

Although no acquisitions are at stake, Lara Sinclair reports that Yahoo7 "signed a deal to make it the on-deck search provider on all Telstra mobile phones. The multi-year deal between Yahoo7 and Telstra’s Sensis division means Yahoo’s oneSearch technology will replace Sensis’s search technology on 4.4 million Telstra BigPond 3G-enabled phones."

This should give Yahoo a pretty huge advantage in the Australian mobile market, and stands as an important testament to the quality of oneSearch. Revenue from display and search advertising – which will be split with Sensis – is worth mentioning, as well.

Meanwhile, sealing the mobile deal isn’t the only thing Yahoo7 has managed to accomplish this week. A new partnership between Yahoo7 and the employment site Seek was also established, which should lead to still more exposure.

Come to think of it, if Yahoo7 keeps achieving things at this rate, it may become a household name in the U.S., after all.
