You may not have known this service existed, and even if you did, it’s unlikely that you used it. At any rate, in Yahoo’s effort to cut back and slim down, Yahoo Bill Pay has become the latest casualty.

Of course, Bill Pay’s relative obscurity provides all the more reason for axing it. “The service, notable when it launched for undercutting banks’ online bill-payment fees, has become outmoded,” states Valleywag’s Owen Thomas. “Almost all banks now offer free Web bill payments.”

Bill Pay isn’t abandoning its followers, however (assuming it has any). “If you are already a registered user you may continue to use the service as you have in the past until September 14, 2007,” Yahoo says in a “Service Announcement.”

But “[n]o payments may be scheduled to occur after September 14, 2007 including recurring payments. You will have access to your Bill Pay account through October 31, 2007 to review past transactions and download your transaction history,” then “[a]ll Yahoo! Bill Pay accounts will be automatically cancelled on November 1, 2007.”

First Yahoo Photos, now this; the search engine company seems to be doing a good job of eliminating unpopular services. Perhaps there’ll be an outcry from Yahoo Bill Pay users, but as Valleywag’s Thomas writes, “Barely able to manage itself, Yahoo can hardly be expected to manage your finances.”
