There is a fundamental distinction between Netflix users and Hulu users, and it goes far beyond who has more allegiance to 30 Rock.

Netflix and Hulu users differ greatly in both how they stream their content and what content they are streaming.

Nielsen conducted a survey and found that 89% of Hulu users report streaming their video directly to their computers. Only 42% of Netflix users said that this is how they watch stuff. Of that 89% of computer-streaming Hulu users, only 20% said that they connect their computers to their TVs.

The majority of Netflix videos are being enjoyed on people’s televisions. Whether that be through the Wii, Xbox360 and PS3 consoles or internet-enabled devices like Roku and Blu-Ray players, chances are good that if you’re streaming Netflix, you’re taking it in on a bigger screen.

One of the most surprising figures to me is the Hulu/Xbox Live stat. Of the 12,000 people that Nielsen asked, only 2% stream Hulu via their Xbox360s? That’s only shocking to me because I remember how excited people were when Hulu announced it was coming to the Microsoft console.

Nielsen also looked at what users are watching on each service. 53% of Netflix users are watching movies while only 11% say they exclusively watch TV shows. 36% said they watch both equally.

When it comes to Hulu, a whopping 73% said that they primarily view TV shows on the service and only 9% said that they primarily view movies. 18% said that they watch both equally.

Does this some something to do with the people? Probably not, as it most likely has more to do with the catalogs. The recent Netflix price hike outrage might cause a significant number of members to say goodbye to their subscriptions, but would they give their money to Hulu Plus instead? It sure seems that at least right now, the two services aren’t competing with each other for the same type of content and user.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all let a lot of information fly at the E3 with regard to their new gaming consoles. The specs of these systems are awesome. They’ve got WiFi and wireless and downloadable systems, massive multiplayer options inside the home or over the network. The visual capabilities will be stunning with the HD graphics capability hooked up to a new Samsung HDTV designed for the gaming experience.

These mega-corporations have given nearly every detail about these incredible consoles save one: release dates. When are they coming? We’ve squeezed a little information out of Bill Gates, sort of. He said November is the release date, in time for Christmas. When in November? Sony has said the spring and Nintendo has said 2006. Tell us the time. Spring is any time between March and June of 2006. With Nintendo, who knows when it’s coming?

It’s funny that all the other information got leaked except for the release dates. People were wondering why Bill Gates couldn’t be quiet about the Xbox when all the other Microsoft people struggled to keep it under wraps. Sony let out the PS3 will have Blu-Ray technology in it. That’s great but we need to know when its coming. Nintendo even said all their old games will be downloadable on line with the advent of Revolution.

Remember the phrase, “I want my MTV!” Well, maybe we should pick up the new phrase, “I want my release date.” With the levels of information that has floated out for the last month and specifically the last week or so on these gaming consoles, one would think this information would be out there soon. Literally hundreds of stories from a myriad of sources float out each day about these new hi-tech toys. No one knows?

Leaks happen. They happen in the federal government, they happen in business, they happen in sports and everything else. Most of the time though, these “leaks” are planned and plotted. These “leaks” are tactical calculations designed to stimulate discussion and opinion one way or the other. Why did Gates let all the Xbox 360 info slide the week before the E3? Publicity is the name of the game on this stuff. What better way to generate more publicity than to make release dates available?

	So when are they coming?

Software monster Microsoft and electronics giant Toshiba signed a patent cross licensing agreement. This will let the two companies use each other's stuff without having to pay fees to the respective companies.

Software monster Microsoft and electronics giant Toshiba signed a patent cross licensing agreement. This will let the two companies use each other’s stuff without having to pay fees to the respective companies.

This could be a boon for both companies. Toshiba is currently locked in a sword duel of electronics companies with Sony over the format of the forthcoming blue laser technology high definition DVDS. Toshiba has the HD-DVD and Sony has the Blu-Ray format. Most people would bet on Sony to be honest but Toshiba, who recently upped their disk to 45 gigs vs. 30 gigs may be able to compete although the price point isn’t there. Sony is still the man to beat though.

Microsoft waged a war if attrition with Sony on the Xbox. Sony’s PS2 has been the dominant force in console games. With Microsoft’s new Xbox 360, they MUST close the market share gap in order to compete. They are planning on offering they Xbox towards the end of the year to take advantage of the holiday season. They debuted the new Xbox on MTV today. They say it has HD capabilities. Of course most people don’t have the HD tvs but that’s beside the point.

Sony’s PS3 will be out probably in the first half of next year. The rumors are that Sony will integrate it’s Blu-Ray technology into the thing and that would make sense. Then one could play DVDs just like you can in the PS2. But with this patent sharing deal with Microsoft and Toshiba, what if, and this is purely speculation mind you, what if they took Toshiba’s HD-DVD and stuck in the Xbox. It would open some new doors certainly. Especially if a new 45 Gb HALO came out as one of the new and improved HD-DVDs. That would put them months ahead of Sony in the game and give both Microsoft and Toshiba some leverage.

I could be totally off the mark here but I’d say this is one of the primary plans of the future. Toshiba had to do some slight retooling of the product when they added the third layer to the DVD. Microsoft may have to do some minor retooling for their player too but I think it would certainly be the way to go for Microsoft and Toshiba.

Australian Financial News quote Microsoft master Gates as saying the new Xbox will make gaming more convivial. It’s not a word you hear everyday. Honestly, I’m not familiar with it so I looked it up. Mirriam Webster said it means this:

So I did some thinking. Conviviality. I’m fond of eating, drinking, and good company. I don’t know that I’m overly occupied with them but I’m certainly fond of them so I guess I’m convivial. But how does eating and drinking and good company relate to my game console?

I guess I could go on line and get my butt kicked at Madden. My brother-in-law is pretty good. I’m not fond of getting pounded though. I suppose it might make me want to drink. Listening to music can be fun though. That would fit into that convivial category though. But I could listen to music on my PC, stereo, my satellite, my PS2 or my PS1. The Xbox certainly doesn’t have the market cornered on that. We could watch movies but then there are as many venues for that as there are for music.

So we game. Folks hookup online for gaming. There are tons of games to play online. It could be the Sims or Madden or one of a host of other games of all types for all kinds of players. It’s going to be in HD. I can appreciate that. Especially with the new Samsung HDTV designed for game consoles and was announced in collaboration with Microsoft.

The new Xbox360 will get its first appearance on MTV later this month. It will offer have an interface similar to the Windows Media Center.

“If you’re used to that menu, when you use this Xenon you’ll see a menu a lot like that that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things,” Gates said at his big WinHEC last week.

Mr. Bill also said that the new Xbox will beat the Sony PS3 due at the end of this year or first part of the next. I know Sony is going to try and put their blue laser DVD into the PS3. I wonder if Mr. Bill will get ahold of that right away. I suppose Toshiba could sell him theirs but that introduces some other competitive problems.

He called this thing an entertainment hub. It’s been suggested it will rival the PC in some ways. But all in all, I don’t see what the Xbox offers over the PS3 or heckeven a PC. I guess Bill wins on the PC front though as the all use Windows in one form or another.

Maybe I’m missing the boat or the video game in this case but an entertainment hub? The centerpiece in home entertainment? I suppose its possible. I just don’t see what the Xbox can offer me compared to the other things that are out there. I’m sure the games are ok but are they better? I’m sure the interface is good, but it is it better? I need a reason to switch. I don’t see it. As an entertainment piece, most don’t have a house full of people solely to play in the Xbox. I don’t see mom and dad sitting there with kids kicking away at the new Tekken.

But waitwhat about if a bunch of guys come over, order pizzas, have a few cases of Old Milwaukee, surf porn and then play Madden. Well I can see it. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Madden 2006 on the Xbox360 AND Samsung’s new HDTV is gonna look so cool. Samsung and Microsoft are tag-teaming on this one and the benefits for the geek set will be unbelievable. It’s going to be a hip offering and MTV will broadcast the event. New games will be available with a better graphics, sound, etc. But now Samsung will help them out just a little with its new HDTV .

The 23-inch LCD television will have some nice upgrades specifically with the game console in mind. One of the biggest changes will be the pixel switching speed going from 16 milliseconds to 12 milliseconds. This will help clear up some of the blur that occasionally happens on LCD screens for fast moving games.

The television will also incorporate SRS TruSurround, which simulates the traditional multispeaker surround sound. A 170-degree viewing area for multiple players/viewers will make a great addition.

“The gaming segment is one we paid no attention to in years past,” said Jonas Tannenbaum, Samsung’s director of marketing. “But it’s a fast-growing segment. These people are intimate with their TV’s.”

This cool cat will run for $1100, $500 less than its current 22-inch HDTV. It’s imply going to ROCK!
