The deal itself is a hefty one, and it, too, is spurring some of the reaction, especially when you consider Pujols’ age (32), and the duration of the contract (10 years). And there’s the amount Pujols signed for, which is enough to make a grown man snatch his son out of whatever extracurricular activity they are in and force the sport of baseball upon them. The amount in question?

$250 million, guaranteed.

As you can see, Twitter has plenty of ammunition to respond with: St Louis Cardinals fans lamenting the loss of the best hitter in baseball, reaction to the obscene amount of money, and, as with all Twitter trends, a few reacting because they are simply following a trend. I think “Rallymonkey this” sums the Pujols signing up very well, although, I doubt you’ll get the St Louis Cardinals fans to agree. Maybe they can console themselves with their most recent World Series title.

What we have is a daughter talking smack on her father’s team’s behalf, and it simply backfired on her. The younger La Russa — who, it should be noted, does not have a space between the “La” and the “Russa” of the her last name, at least on her now defunct Twitter profile — made fun of some previous history connected to Texas Rangers manager, Ron Washington.

Because Devon’s Twitter account is no longer active, the tweets in question don’t exist any longer, but that doesn’t mean her attempts at being funny haven’t been captured for all to see, courtesy of a screenshot. Before that, however, the text of the tweet that started this mess, according to Yahoo’s Big League Stew, said:

I saw a crack head doing “The Wash” today. Coincidence? I think not…

Two things for those who may not know: “The Wash” refers to a dance that imitates the Texas manager’s reactions when he’s in approval mode. See it for yourself:

And second, Washington admitted he struggled with cocaine throughout his adult life, and, in fact, Washington tested positive for the stuff as recently as 2009. Again, this seems like perfect fodder for anonymous fans to use, but for the opposing manager’s daughter?

Yeah, no.

Because of her ill-advised tweet — leave that nonsense for the fans, Devon, and not the siblings of one of the World Series managers — La Russa’s daughter was forced to defend her statement with perhaps the most ridiculous excuse you’ve ever heard, which was preserved via a screenshot of her Twitter account:

As for the excuse, surely the younger La Russa had to know what kind of firestorm she would set off with her initial tweet, and to simply back down is weak. Once the situation reaches critical mass like this one did — this story’s pretty popular right now — it’s time to own your mistake, and not back down with “oh, I’m just being silly” responses. Apparently, the subsequent reaction was too much for La Russa’s daughter to handle, and so, she deactivated her Twitter account, at least the public one that got her into all this trouble.

Social media really isn’t this hard, folks. Really, it isn’t.

Twitter, of course, is one of the primary outlets. Because of the viral celebrity status of the Busch Rally Squirrel and Torty Craig, these two are the dominant voices, at least for St Louis. While there is Texas Rangers stuff, these fans need to step their game up in relation to the squirrel and the tortoise. Speaking of these two fan favorites, they’ve both been quite active as the opening game draws closer:

Clearly, that’s being “sung” to the tune of Winter Wonderland. The World Series as a whole is pretty popular on Twitter as well, with such tidbits like:

Which is quite true. Look up the bios for Ron Washington and Tony LaRussa for more on the topics mentioned by The Big Lead. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Kevin Negandhi decided to be a jerk to Chicago Cubs fans:

As indicated, the chatter from Texas Rangers fans has been fairly muted on Twitter. Thankfully, however, one particular Rangers fan decided to, much like Torty, express herself in song. Let’s hope fan performances don’t determine winners, otherwise, the Rangers could be in trouble:

In case you were wondering, the #Occupy trendsetters are getting in on the action as well, and their plan is to show the World Series without commercials:

We will be projecting the game on our big screen, but without corporate sponsors! Commercials will be replaced with other Occupy groups’ livestream! Hopefully we will hear from Occupy Dallas!

Needless to say, at least on conservative pundit — Laura Ingraham — was less-than-impressed, which is quite clear with her belittling response on Facebook:

Seriously? What would be the point of this? The protesters claim they may be doing this for the media attention, but I hardly think camping outside Busch Stadium in St. Louis will garner more attention that slowly taking over downtown Manhattan. Nevertheless, police in St. Louis are preparing for a group of anti-capitalist, anti-personal hygene, pro-dope smoking trust fund babies to camp out at the World Series.

Any other stereotypes you want to throw in there, Laura? Perish the thought of people having a different outlook than your gilded perspective. Of course, it should be noted Ingraham is part of the one percent people are protesting against, something her $15 million a year salary indicates quite nicely.

Of course, there’s the line of thinking that should perhaps question Occupy St Louis’ motivation about rooting for multi-million dollar athletes, but that’s another discussion for another day, apparently.

For the majority of us who will be watching, thankfully, the World Series is about athletic excellence, and not protesting against an invisible monster no one has any idea how to slay. The team and their fans are experiencing a sports nightmare: a World Series that starts in Denver on Saturday with 20,000 tickets up for grabs, and no way to purchase them. TheDenverChannel.com reported on the frustrations of numerous fans who have been shut out of the high-tech ticket process.

Blame for the problem has been laid at the feet of unnamed malicious attackers, who caused the servers managed by Paciolan to shut down as thousands of fans hit the system. They and Major League Baseball have addressed the problem, according to a statement from the Rockies, and plan to try selling tickets again, online, starting at 2 pm EDT.

“Our partners at MLB.com and Paciolan have fully assessed the situation and assured us that tomorrow’s online sale will go as originally planned,” a Rockies spokesperson said.

Fark.com owner Drew Curtis told TheDenverChannel he was one of the many people shut off from the process, as he tried to buy tickets for his father, a Colorado resident.

“These idiots always have these consultants that tell them, ‘Sure, the server can handle the traffic,’” said Curtis. “In reality, that only works over the course of a day. If a zillion people hit the damn thing all at once, it goes boom. Think CNN on 9/11.”

Only about 500 tickets had been sold before the attacks took the system offline.
