Apparently, the way to become a Twitter trend, especially if you are a women’s tennis player, is to lose. Just ask Caroline Wozniacki. Coming into Wimbledon 2011, Wozniacki was considered the favorite to win the women’s bracket. And then her match against Dominika Cibulkova happened, in what apparently was a battle of the new generation of attractive female tennis stars.

Now, Caroline Wozniacki is a trending Twitter topic, thanks to her being upset at the hands of Cibulkova. Both the Williams sisters were ousted as well, but they aren’t burning up the Twitter trends like Wozniacki, although, Venus’ winning opponent, Tsvetana Pironkova, is.

As expected, the related tweets are filled with surprise that many of the Wimbledon favorites like Wozniacki and the Williams sisters are now out. There is also an interesting statistic, pointed out by ESPN:

While tennis may be a little further down on the rung when it comes to popular sporting events when compared to NFL football and the like, there’s still a very savvy crowd keeping up with it, and, of course, social media makes it all that much easier.

Speaking of easy, Twitter and Wimbledon, someone had better calm Andy Murray’s mom, Judy Murray, down.
All of this salivating and camera-melting was a little too much for Murray, and so, he chastised his mom through the media:

“I think it’s about time she stopped that nonsense. Makes me want to throw up. It’s disgusting,” said Murray, who could meet Lopez in the quarter-finals.

Too bad Murray didn’t go after his mom’s flirtations on Twitter. That would’ve made Judy Murray’s tweet stream all the more epic.

Tennis fans need not be limited in their Wimbledon viewing by the capricious whims of broadcast networks, thanks to another season of Winbledon Live online.

Traveling to England involves the usual annoyances of flying internationally, from having all of your documents handy while juggling a carry-on, to taking off shoes for scanning while hoping the aroma from them doesn’t set off an airport lockdown.

Rather than vying for a coveted seat at Centre Court, lots of people opt for the excellent television coverage and commentary of Wimbledon each summer. Since last year, MediaZone and broadcasters ESPN and NBC have made Wimbledon Live available to Internet users.

For a flat all-access fee, or the purchase of a daily pass, people can catch all of the matches on Wimbledon’s courts. This is made available as live and on-demand coverage of the tennis taking place during the tournament.

The Wimbledon fan will need a Windows computer running Windows Media Player and a broadband connection to handle the streams. There’s no Mac or Linux availability, and champagne and strawberries & cream purchases are the responsibility of the viewer.

However, this year’s subscribers will be able to grab something new from the site. A PDF copy of the official program will be placed online for download by paying customers. Fans will be able to choose from over 300 matches being played this year.

Unless you are in a country where live streaming won’t be available, the deal looks like it’s ‘advantage viewers’.

So, the Google Video Store is live, and, ehh. Nothing special.

What do we get?

$40 health care videos?

Uneven selection of CBS shows, missing key episodes of big series and with few episodes of others

176 episodes of The Charlie Rose Show?

A very uneven list of mostly commercially useless old stuff, like Rescue From Gilligan’s Island, The Lucy Show, old John Wayne movies, Dick Tracy, but all for only $1.99. Also includes original versions of movies you liked in the more modern versions (Chronicles of Narnia, animated; the 1960 Little Shop of Horrors).

Videos on Nobel Prize winners, for the same $1.99

Golf retrospectives, for seven bucks

An Ed Sullivan special, in two parts, for $9.99 for each part

Music videos from Sony BMG, some free, some $1.99

Teen Kids News, for 99 cents

Wheels TV, “vehicle-based entertainment”, for 99 cents

Wimbledon specials, for $7

So, besides a complete lack of quality content (save for CBS), a lack of complete sets (for CBS content, and other TV shows), there’s a big problem with inconsistency in pricing. I commend Google for not engaging in price fixing, a tack that works well for music (where lengths and perceived value are roughly uniform) but is an awful idea for video.

The diversity in video is a huge strength, with episodic TV series, movies, talk shows, nonfiction specials, interviews and sports programming, but Google should have made an effort to achieve consitency among pricing. I realize content providers are mostly asses, and the negotiations were probably a huge effort, but maybe Google should have set recommended prices.

Even better, I would have just used a bids-based system, like Google AdWords uses. Except, instead of prices set automatically by top bids, it would be set by views. The prices would all start at $1.99, and rise and fall based on how many people view the video. If the video is unpopular, the system would lower the price a little to see if it improved overall revenue, while if it is popular, it would go up in price, dropping back down if the new price turned off too many buyers. Not only would it make for a fast-adjusting fair market, but it would earn providers the most amount of money, ensure the largest possible audience, and discourage price gouging (which is clearly already happening).

Since Google isn’t doing it already, we can assume it won’t be forcing CBS into a new agreement anytime soon, so we can only hope providers will watch their sales carefully and adjust their prices over time. Don’t count on it though, since most of these guys have been content to let crap sit on Blockbuster shelves, gathering dust until Blockbuster is forced to sell it at a loss.

Getting back to the main point, at current, the Google Video Store isn’t anything special. I wanted to download a show to gauge quality, but I can’t find anything I want. The single NCIS episode in the entire collection is a repeat, and not a very good one.

Worse, the date listed is January 4, 2006, which is presumable when it was uploaded, but not when it originally ran, which can be misleading for fans looking for the latest episode (it almost fooled me). Worse, the show is only available with a Day Pass, meaning you lose it after 24 hours. Not having show descriptions? Huge mistake.

It seems like Google made no effort to require consistency of pricing, completeness of sets, quality of metadata, or anything else. I can’t see why anyone would rely on the Google Video Store for their needs. As long as iTunes and Vongo are doing a better job, you aren’t going to get customers.

Additionally, Google has made little effort at building a usable interface. Google Video is just a search engine, which doesn’t work well as a store. I know Google practically created the church of white space and clean interfaces, but rich content needs something better. I can’t find what I need, view large amounts of content at once, compare options and purchase in bulk for later viewing.

There’s a lot of other criticism out there, so much that linking to it would make this post more ungodly long. One thing we know about Google: It doesn’t bother them if they get it wrong the first time. Hopefully they’ll fix this one faster than they usually do.

Botched. Totally botched.

There are immense similarities between peak performance in sport, and what it takes to perform well in your life and business. The sports arena offers great opportunities to learn more about playing successfully in life and business. As I watched the recent tennis at Wimbledon it struck me that there were strengths and characteristics in the players that are necessary for us all in order to perform at our absolute best. If you want the best performance, either in your personal life, your career or your business, here are the 7 key things you need and which I observed in the tennis players.

1. Focus. Tennis players focus intensely and specifically on what they’re doing at the moment. Their mind isn’t drifting off to other things. They know that being focused is essential to success and you can’t take your eye off the ball. Although their focus is more intense than you usually need in an average day, when you take your eye off the ball too often, you could easily find yourself slipping behind and not staying ahead of the game.

2. They respond fully rather than react. Responding means that you’re ready, you’re prepared and not likely to be caught out unexpectedly. Responding comes from being grounded and allows you to choose what to do next, whereas reacting is a knee jerk response. Reacting means you fight fires, you’re constantly running behind and battling with the unexpected, rather than making choices that fully contribute to what you truly want.

3. They know what they’re aiming for; where they’re heading. You need to be clear about your aims or you could end up all over the place. Tennis players make a conscious choice to place a shot. They don’t just hit the ball and hope. You need to make conscious choices about where you want to be and ensure that every action moves you forward in the direction you want to go.

4. They see the connection between the bigger picture and the next step. You need to know what the bigger picture is like for you and at the same time be willing to focus on the moment and take the next step forward. Tennis players know that every shot and every point counts, even if it’s early on in the game. You need to make every action you take count and continue to build on it.

5. They’re mentally and emotionally strong. They don’t allow doubt, lack of self-belief, frustration, upsets or negative self-talk to get in their way. They’re willing to do what it takes to be strong mentally and emotionally. When you allow your emotions and mental chit-chat to affect you, you’re not so likely to perform at your best. As human beings, emotions play a big part in our lives. I’m not suggesting you deny or suppress your emotions, but just discover for yourself what it takes for you to handle your emotions and stay balanced.

6. Flexibility. Tennis players need to be flexible in their approach to each game. Each opponent is different, has different strengths and weaknesses, so they need to be flexible to change. If they lacked flexibility they wouldn’t be able to adapt to different situations and come out winning. When you’re flexible, you’re willing to consider the best approach for each particular situation.

7. Clarity. They are clear about all the components that go together to make their game successful. Lack of clarity holds you back, keeps you in fear and doubt and can result in you taking lots of actions but which are all over the place.

Life is a game and your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to play fully.
