What is your current position and the name of the company you work for?

I am currently employed as a Web Analytics Specialist/Consultant at OX2, in Brussels, Belgium.

I had a comment/question yesterday that I thought raised an essential question about Functionalism, web analytics and how to think about them.

Open source log-based web analytics software makes it easier to make sense of web server logs, but proprietary log-based web analytics software typically takes analytics to another level.

When we were young, we played with hit counters. Now we are grown, we need something more. Log-based web analytics programs are hit counters for adults.

It’s pretty much impossible to give a fair accounting of someone else’s methodology. You’re almost bound to simplify in the wrong places, give the wrong emphasis, miss the finer points.

Is there really a problem with the way web analytics is performed? I think there probably is, but I don’t pretend to know the answer for sure – or to believe that it’s a question that can be easily answered.
